Chlamydia is a rather common bacterial infection that is transmitted through sexual contact with an infected person. In United States as many as 5% of people suffer from this infection while among the adolescent females that are sexually active as many as 10% suffer from this condition. In many cases of Chlamydia infection no symptoms may be visible. In other cases Chlamydia causes certain symptoms. The Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria are responsible for this infection. While these bacteria can be transferred through sexual contact with infected persons these bacteria cannot be transferred through casual contact that includes a handshake.

A transmission of these bacteria from a pregnant woman suffering from this condition to her newborn child can also be one of the Chlamydia causes. Many children in the developing countries tend to suffer from this condition and it can result in complications such as eye infections along with pneumonia.

Among the symptoms observed in women Chlamydia causes such symptoms as vaginal discharge along with abdominal pain and bleeding between menstrual cycles. Women may also experience bleeding following sexual intercourse. Among men the symptoms may include penile discharge along with burning during urination. Men may also experience inflammation of the testicles.

Sexual intercourse which is one of the Chlamydia causes includes vaginal sex, anal sex along with oral sex and other genital contact with an infected person. To reduce the risk of contracting this infection it is advisable to use a condom while indulging in sexual intercourse. Likewise it is advisable to be involved in a monogamous relationship with a person who is not infected so as to avoid this condition.

If timely treatment for this condition is not sought then certain complication can result and these complications include pelvic inflammatory disease. Such complications can result in infertility. A person diagnosed with this condition will also need to get the partner diagnosed and treated for this condition.
