Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease which is caused due to the Chlamydia trachomatis bacterium. With Chlamydia in men and women, they may experience some disconcerting symptoms that require medical intervention. In the absence of proper treatment this condition can result in some painful complications.

This infection is more common with men as compared to women. In fact around 2% of the general population of United States is infected with this condition. Every year as many as 2.8 million new Chlamydia cases are reported in United States. In Chlamydia men and women can experience the symptoms if they indulge in sexual intercourse including vaginal, anal and oral sex with infected individuals.

It is also important to understand that in some cases of chlamydia no symptoms may be present. In fact around 70% women and 50% men do not have any symptoms associated with this condition. In some cases of Chlamydia in men, they experience symptoms such as burning near the opening of the penis, increased frequency of urination, pain during urination and whitish or greenish penile discharge.

Among women the Chlamydia symptoms include vaginal discharge along with pain during urination and lower abdominal pain. Women may also experience bleeding between menstrual cycles. With Chlamydia in men and women, they need to seek timely medical attention and in the absence of treatment this condition can cause complications such as inflammation of testicles among men.

Among men lack of treatment can affect the sperm count and also adversely affect the male fertility. Other complications among men may also include inflammation of the testicles along with pain and swelling in the scrotum. Among women lack of treatment can cause problems related to the fertility and this can result in pelvic pain. Among pregnant women lack of treatment for this condition may result in problems like premature birth and ectopic pregnancy.
