Chlamydia Symptoms

Chlamydia is a common bacterial infection that can be transmitted through sexual contact with an infected person. In United States around 5% of the adult population is infected with this condition and as many as 10% of adolescent females who are sexually active suffer from this infection. In a large number of cases no visible Chlamydia symptoms are observed.

Chlamydia is caused by the Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria. Such an infection can be transferred through sexual intercourse or by a pregnant mother suffering from this condition to her newborn child. In as many as 70 to 80% of the cases having this infection chlamydia symptoms are not observed. So in many cases the infection is not detected till some complications occur.

However in the cases where Chlamydia symptoms are observed the signs include discharge from vagina along with pain in the lower abdominal region. Individuals suffering from this condition may also experience pain during urination and bleeding following intercourse or the bleeding may be experienced between the menstrual cycles. In 25 to 50% of the cases of Chlamydia among men symptoms may not exist.

Among men the symptoms associated with this condition include penile discharge along with pain during urination. Inflammation and pain in the testicles may also be experienced. In some cases the Chlamydia symptoms may include fever along with abdominal pain and increased frequency of urination.

In the absence of timely intervention for the Chlamydia symptoms and infection certain complications may arise. These complications include pelvic inflammatory disease which may affect the fertility of the person. While treating the symptoms and the infection a doctor will primarily check the patient for tenderness in the regions near the sex organs. Certain diagnostic tests including cultures can help in detection of this infection. Treatment of this condition includes certain antibiotics such as azithromycin and doxycycline. Azithromycin may be taken in a single dose while doxycycline may be taken for a week.
