GonnorheaGonnorhea is a disease that is sexually transmitted and in this bacterial infection the urethra and cervix along with anus, rectum, pelvic organs and throat may be affected. This condition can result in some serious health issues. If this condition is not treated in time then it can result in some problems in women like pelvic inflammatory disease along with ectopic pregnancy or infertility. If gonnorhea is not treated then it can result in increased risk of developing bladder cancer. This condition primarily results from the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria. This infection can be transmitted through sexual intercourse including vaginal, oral and anal intercourse with an infected partner. An infected partner with or without symptoms can transmit the infection. Likewise a pregnant woman suffering from this condition may transfer it to her newborn child in the process of delivery. In the early stages no visible symptoms may be observed in many cases while in some other cases the associated symptoms may be quite mild. Some patients may also remain infected for many months without visible symptoms. There are as many as 750,000 gonnorhea cases annually observed in United States. The symptoms associated with gonnorhea include pain during urination along with anal itching and abnormal penile or vaginal discharge. Sore throat is commonly observed in cases where the infection affects the throat. The symptoms observed in women may at times be mistaken to be vaginal or bladder infections. The incubation period for this infection is between 2 to 5 days and at times the symptoms may not be observed for as long as 30 days. The diagnosis of gonnorhea is done through laboratory tests along with physical examination. The treatment of this infection includes taking certain antibiotics and the infected individuals should avoid indulging in sexual contact during the treatment. Individuals taking the single medicine dose should avoid sexual contact for around 7 days after the medicine is taken so that sufficient time is given for the medicine to work. It is advisable to be in a monogamous relationship with a person who is not infected with gonnorhea and this will ensure that the infection does not spread. Condom use can also help in reducing the risk of infecting other individuals with this disease. |
