Gonorrhea Symptoms

The research on gonorrhea indicates that every year around 600,000 new cases of this condition are found in United States. Among women this condition may not result in visible symptoms and yet it can have devastating effects particularly on the reproductive system among women. Identification of gonorrhea symptoms can help in proper diagnosis and allow the patients to seek treatment.

Gonorrhea results from the neisseria gonorrhea bacteria and this bacterium is found in the vagina, throat, penis, eye and rectum regions in the body. A person who is infected can transfer these bacteria from one area of the body to another through mere touch. Gonorrhea can also be transferred through sexual activity. There are some gonorrhea symptoms that can help in identification of this problem.

Gonorrhea symptoms are different for men and women. Among women the cervix is affected but if this condition is left untreated then the infection can spread to the fallopian tubes and the uterus. Among women the symptoms often are not noticed. The noticeable symptoms in some cases may include abnormal bleeding, burning sensation while urinating and vaginal discharge. In many cases irritation in the outer regions of the vagina may also be experienced.

Among men the gonorrhea symptoms include penile discharge that may be yellow and pus like. Along with discharge burning sensation during urination may also be observed. Likewise many men suffering from gonorrhea may also feel the need to frequently urinate. In some cases blood may be observed in the urine and swelling of the glands in the groin region may also be observed.

In other cases the penis head may become red. Men or women may also experience this infection within the rectum or the throat. The gonorrhea symptoms of swelling, pain and discharge may be experienced quite often. The symptoms associated with this condition may be experienced depending on the way in which this disease is contracted and the period for which this disease is experienced.

The gonorrhea symptoms may be observed around 2 to 10 days after the infection but in some cases the symptoms may become visible after as many as 30 days. Women may also experience bleeding following sexual intercourse. In the later period the symptoms may include feelings of nausea, vomiting, fever and bleeding between the menstrual cycles.

When this infection affects the anal region gonorrhea symptoms may include pain in the bowel movements, discharge, itching along with bloody stools. If the infection is oral then the symptoms may include a sore throat. Pus like material may be found on the tonsil region or the back region of the throat. Without proper treatment gonorrhea can result in numerous complications.

In some cases gonorrhea can result in complications like pelvic inflammatory diseases and this in turn can also result in infertility. The chances of ectopic pregnancies also increase due to these complications. Among men untreated gonorrhea can result in epididymitis which is a painful condition afflicting the testicles and this can result in infertility. Proper diagnosis and treatment of this condition is advisable.
