HPV Genital Warts

The human papilomavirus affects the skin and mucous membranes in a person’s body. In many cases there may be no visible symptoms associated with this virus. However in many cases hpv genital warts are commonly observed among infected individuals. These warts affect different areas of the body including the genital areas such as vagina, vulva, penis and anal areas.

The hpv genital warts may disappear without any treatment and even in such a case the virus continues to thrive in the body. The warts may not be entirely visible to the naked eye. The genital warts are commonly located in regions of the vagina, cervix or the anus. Among men the genital warts may be observes near the penis, scrotum or the anus.

The hpv genital warts are basically bumps or growths and these may be raised or flat. The warts may be small or large in size and they may be whitish or even flesh colored. There are more than 100 different types of hvp viruses and some of them cause warts that are normally seen on the hands and feet of infected individuals.

Genital warts are caused by more than 30 kinds of hvp viruses. The hvp wart along with genital warts can be passed on from one person to another through sexual contact including vaginal, anal and oral sex. In rare cases the genital warts may be transmitted by a pregnant woman to her newborn child. People having warts are not normally aware of them as the warts do not hurt or itch.

When hpv genital warts are present the infection is most contagious. A few weeks or months following an exposure a person may develop warts. Diagnosis of this condition can be done through visual examination of the warts. Some tests like Pap smear test can also help in identifying this condition. The treatment of warts is done based on the location of the warts along with other aspects such as the size of the warts and their number.

Some hpv wart along with genital warts can be treated by applying a medicine. Warts can also be removed by freezing them with a laser or chemical treatment. Using condoms can provide some degree of protection from this condition though the protection would be limited as the condom cannot cover all the affected areas. Indulging in sexual contact in a mutually monogamous relationship with an uninfected individual can be an effective way of preventing this condition.
