Hpv stands for human papillomavirus and this is a rather common virus. There are in excess of 40 kinds of hpv and these can be passed on through sexual contact with an infected person. With hpv in men, they may experience genital warts in the genital regions such as the penis, scrotum and the anus. Among women hpv causes warts near the vulva, vagina and the rectum.

With hpv in men, they may not always experience the associated symptoms. In some cases this virus can also result in penile or anal cancer. Different types of hpv cause genital warts and cancer. Around 1% of men who are sexually active tend to suffer from genital warts at some point of time. It is also important to understand that gay along with bisexual men are more likely to develop problems like anal cancer as compared to heterosexual men.

Hpv can be transmitted through sexual contact including vaginal along with anal sex. In the condition of hpv in men, they may be suffering from the infection but may not have any symptoms and so may not be aware of this problem. Currently no specific test for diagnosis of hpv among men exists. However anal Pap test can help identify possible cases of anal cancer.

However with hpv in men , those who are having genital warts, can be diagnosed through physical and visual examination of the warts. The genital warts can be removed by applying medicine or through surgery or they can also be frozen off. Penile or anal cancer can be treated with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.

Using condoms can reduce the chances of transmitting hpv to a partner but this may not be completely effective as the infection can affect areas not covered by condoms. Hpv among men tends to clear out from the body easily as compared to women. Indulging in sexual contact in a mutually monogamous relationship with an individual who is not infected can help in preventing the infection.
