Neisseria Gonorrhoeae
Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a type of gram negative cocci that are found in pairs and are responsible for development of the gonorrhea disease. These bacteria are seen in pairs with flattened adjacent sides. These bacteria can be transmitted through sexual contact. Maximum cases of gonorrhea are seen in men and women belonging to the age group of 15 to 29. Neisseria gonorrhoeae grow and multiple very easily in areas that are warm and moist. So areas of uterus, cervix and the fallopian tubes in women are ideal areas where these bacteria can thrive. These bacteria also grow in other regions like the urethra, throat, anus, eyes and mouth. These bacteria can be transmitted easily through contact with vagina, mouth, anus or the penis. Ejaculation is not necessary for these bacteria to be transferred, Neisseria gonorrhoeae usually infects the mucus membrane in individuals and result in problems like urethritis, pelvic inflammatory disease, cervicitis, pahryngitis and conjunctivitis. The incubation period in males is around 2 to 3 days following which purulent discharge from urethra develops and this is followed by dysuria. In women these bacteria primarily affect the area of cervix but in many cases the symptoms associated with this condition are mild. The symptoms associated with neisseria gonorrhoeae infection include vaginal discharge along with abdominal pain. In some cases the symptoms observed in this condition among women may be mistaken to be vaginal or bladder infection. The complications related to ascending infection may include abscess of ovarian tube along with pelvic inflammatory disease. Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection can also be transferred from a pregnant woman to her child during the process of delivery. This can result in blindness, life threatening infection and joint infection in the infant. Diagnosis of this condition and detection of these bacteria can be done through culture. Likewise examination of the vaginal discharge under a microscope can also help in detection of these bacteria. Certain antibiotics can be taken as a part of the treatment of these bacteria. |
