STD Transmission

Std refers to a sexually transmitted disease and std transmission occurs by sexual contact. There are in excess of 20 std infections and the most common among these include syphilis, herpes, HIV, Chlamydia and gonorrhea. Those individuals who have multiple sexual partners are at a greater risk of getting std.

The common symptoms after a std transmission include penile or vaginal discharge and eruption of sores around the genital areas. Transmission of the organisms responsible for std occurs through the mucous membranes as warm and moist areas are ideal for these organisms to thrive. HIV virus can be transmitted through blood and blood products, sexual contact, sharing of needles and from mother to the infant.

HIV cannot be transmitted through sweat, urine, tears or feces and also through sharing of bedding, utensils, towels and swimming pools. HIV does not spread through kissing as well. Std transmission in the case of Chlamydia can occur through blood, semen, vaginal fluid and it can also be passed on from a pregnant woman to her child. In the case of Chlamydia the virus can also be transferred if eyes are infected and contact is made with the infected site.

Chancroid can be transmitted by direct sexual contact and the std transmission can also occur when infection spreads through abrasions, physical contact and rubbing and scratching of the infected area. Gonorrhea is transmitted through direct sexual contact and also from a pregnant woman to her child. The infection can also be transferred to other locations in the body when the infected area is touched.

The human papilloma virus is transmitted by infected individuals who are not aware of their infection. This virus may be transmitted through touching of the genitals during sexual contact and it may also be transmitted by a pregnant woman to her child. In the case of granuloma inguinale the std transmission can occur through sexual contact with a person who is infected and also by touching of infected areas. Herpes can be transmitted through sexual contact with a person who is infected and also through direct contact with lesions.

Syphilis can be transmitted through broken skin of an infected person to other individuals. It can also pass through sexual contact and a pregnant woman can pass on this problem to her child. Trichomoniasis can be transmitted through sexual intercourse, contaminated bedding, and bodily fluids and through toilet seats as well.
