Syphilis TreatmentSyphilis is a sexually transmitted infection which is caused by a bacterium treponema pallid. Syphilis can also be transmitted through direct contact with a sore which is one of the symptoms in this condition. In many cases people are not aware of being infected with syphilis and end up passing it through sexual contact. Without proper syphilis treatment this condition can affect the other body parts and may also be fatal in some cases. Syphilis treatment can be undertaken after proper diagnosis and identifying the symptoms associated with this condition can help in making an accurate diagnosis. The infection is normally infectious in the first two stages. In the first stage a person may get a sore on the lips of the vagina, mouth or the penis. In the secondary stage the symptoms include rash, weight loss, and loss of appetite and muscle aches. In the first stage the sore tends to disappear in 2 to 3 weeks. Even after syphilis treatment the infection tends to move to the second stage. In the absence of treatment in the second stage the symptoms may disappear but recurrence of symptoms may be observed over the following two years. Treatment of syphilis includes taking some antibiotics. If syphilis treatment is not taken it can result in development of some fatal conditions that involve such organs as the heart, brain or the spinal cord. Such complications can result in memory loss, impotence and vision problems among other problems. For diagnosis of this condition physical examination and blood test is required. Penicillin is an effective syphilis treatment and in case a patient is allergic to penicillin then tetracycline may be used. It is advisable to practice safe sex and use condoms to prevent transmission of this infection. Syphilis is relatively easy to cure in the earlier stages and normally a single injection of penicillin is administered. Patients who have had this condition for more than a year may need further intramuscular doses. Syphilis treatment can kill the bacteria and this can ensure that no further damage is caused. However the treatment cannot repair any damage that is already caused by the infection. No home remedies and other over the counter drugs can cure this infection. Those receiving treatment for syphilis should not indulge in sexual contact with any new partners till the sores are healed. The partners should also be notified so that they can be tested and treated. |
