Trichomonas Infection

Trichomonas infection is caused by the trichomonas vaginalis parasite and this infection is called trichomoniasis. This is one of the common sexually transmitted infections and affects women in the age group of 16 to 35 years. There are around 2 million women in United States who are infected with this condition.

Trichomonas infection is normally spread through sexual contact and the infection is rather common among those women who tend to have multiple sexual partners. People believe that this infection may be spread through the toilet seat but this is a wrong belief because the parasite cannot survive for long on objects or other environment.

The sign and symptoms associated with his condition may vary and in some cases no symptoms may be observed while in other cases the condition may be extremely symptomatic. Typical symptoms associated with this condition include frothy green emission from a person’s vagina and this may be accompanied by a foul smell. In many cases vaginal redness and itching is also experienced.

Some other symptoms related to the trichomonas infection may include pain during sexual intercourse along with increased urge to urinate and discomfort in the abdominal region. Among men the infection may not have any symptoms and if they are present these would include urethral discharge along with urgency to urinate and a burning sensation during urination.

Many women tend to develop the symptoms around 6 months after getting the infection. Among women the trichomonas infection is diagnosed through a pelvic examination in which the vaginal samples are collected for the purpose of their examination. Diagnosis can be made by observing the parasite underneath a microscope. Culturing is done to diagnose the infection and this may take around 3 to 7 days.

Among men the diagnosis involves taking specimens from the person’s urethra for examination. In rare cases the trichomonas infection may be transmitted to a new born baby by the pregnant woman. Among infants transmission of the infection may result in development of fever and girls may also suffer from vaginal discharge. This infection can be successfully treated through some antibiotic drugs.

It is advisable for those suffering from this infection to abstain from sexual contact till the time the infection is treated. It is also advisable that latex condoms are used every time a person indulges in sexual intercourse. People indulging in sexual contact with multiple partners are at a greater risk of suffering from this infection. So it is advisable to limit the sexual partners. If a person is infected his/her sexual partner should also be treated for this infection.
